THE REGION

Chongli is the mountain district of Zhangjiakou in Hebei, northwest of Beijing. Yunding and Genting are names for the same ski area in the Taizicheng cluster. Nearby Thaiwoo is a different resort. The National Ski Jumping Centre, known as Snow Ruyi, is a separate Olympic landmark.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Chongli’s ski resorts are spread across the mountains. At Yunding, the glass walls at Jinhua Pavilion make the summit part of lunch. The hotel restaurants at the base are an easier meeting place for a group finishing at different times. Thaiwoo has its own village for visitors who are staying or spending an evening there.

GETTING THERE

From either Beijing airport, allow time to reach the departure station in the city. Look up Beijing North (Beijingbei) or Qinghe to Taizicheng on Railway 12306. Check the stops and ski-bag arrangements for your train, then arrange the road transfer from Taizicheng to Yunding. Book the return leg if you are making a day trip. For self-driving, check Chinese driving-permit requirements before reserving a vehicle; visitors may need a temporary Chinese permit.

WHEN TO GO

Midwinter is cold in Chongli. Pack for exposed lift rides and plan an indoor lunch stop. For a weekend or Spring Festival visit, reserve travel and lodging together. Check snow coverage, open trails and any night-skiing or freestyle sessions for your dates.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🎭

Chongli Olympic Park and Snow Ruyi

Culture

See the distinctive outline of the National Ski Jumping Centre in the Chongli Olympic cluster. Check the park’s visiting calendar for access to individual venues.

🏔️

Thaiwoo ski village

Outdoor

Plan a separate outing to this neighboring Chongli resort for skiing or dinner. Arrange your return to Yunding ahead of time.

🎭

Dajing Gate, Zhangjiakou

Culture

Make a separate city outing to this Ming Great Wall landmark in Zhangjiakou. Allow time for the road trip from the ski district.

WHERE TO STAY

For skiing at Yunding itself, ask the resort about Genting Grand Hotel and the South Wing Apartments. Confirm your building, room layout and package inclusions before paying. InterContinental Chongli is in Taizicheng, a useful regional base if you arrange onward transport.

Thaiwoo Hotel and Eagle’s Nest International Youth Hotel are at Thaiwoo, a separate ski area. Holiday Inn Express Chongli is in the Cuiyunshan resort area near Yinhe. For either base, plan how you will get to Yunding and back with ski gear. If you prefer to sleep in Beijing, check both train directions and the local connection for your exact ski day.

THE FOOD SCENE

On the mountain, Jinhua Pavilion has light meals and hot drinks with a view. Yunding Grand Hotel has two distinct choices on the third floor: Green Dragon for Sichuan food and Blue Lagoon for Chinese and Western options. If you are staying at neighboring Thaiwoo, Sanchuan Hotpot is a group dinner choice there.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

For an evening at Yunding, ask Green Dragon about a table. If your group is staying at Thaiwoo, The Bar at Hyatt Place Chongli serves drinks and shareable snacks. Plan the ride between the two resort villages before settling in.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Save the destination name in Chinese, 云顶滑雪公园, for the road transfer from Taizicheng.
  • 💡If you are bringing skis by train, check the baggage arrangements on Railway 12306 when reserving seats.
  • 💡For an Olympic venue outing, distinguish Snow Ruyi’s ski jump from the freestyle and snowboard courses at Yunding. Confirm public visiting arrangements first.
