THE REGION

June Lake sits beneath the Eastern Sierra, with June, Gull, Silver and Grant lakes along the scenic loop. The village combines small lodging properties, local dining and outdoor trips in a compact mountain setting.

June Mountain offers a smaller-scale alternative within the region, with the main chalet and skiing reached from a chairlift above the parking area. Mammoth is a separate destination to the south; a trip can include both, but moving between them uses road and ski time.

In the warmer seasons, the full lake circuit offers fishing, hiking and scenic stops. Winter changes that layout: the north side closes with snow, and plans should use open access points rather than assume a full loop drive.

THE LOCAL SCENE

June Lake’s small village and cabin-style stays lend themselves to a relaxed evening after skiing. Tiger Bar & Cafe has been a village gathering place since 1932; June Lake Brewing adds locally brewed beer and food from La Parrilla. A café meal, a brewery stop or cooking at your lodging can be as much of the trip as another outing.

The same lakes that draw skiers for winter scenery support fishing, hiking and boating trips in the warmer months. Seasonal businesses and road closures shape the experience, so choose the activities and accommodation that operate for your visit.

GETTING THERE

Reach June Mountain from US 395 using the southern junction of SR 158 through June Lake. The northern part of the June Lake Loop closes with snow; do not plan winter access through either end interchangeably. Follow current Caltrans road conditions and traction controls, including requirements for your vehicle.

From Southern California, US 395 is the main Eastern Sierra approach. Bay Area trips require a winter-open route around the Sierra; Tioga Road through Yosemite and Sonora Pass are seasonal routes, so summer drive estimates can be misleading. Leave time for storms and stops.

Mammoth Yosemite Airport (MMH) and Bishop (BIH) are flight options with different seasonal services. Compare flights and arrange onward transport before booking. A stay in Mammoth means a separate drive to June Mountain; pass access, lessons and equipment arrangements should be checked for the mountain you will actually use.

At June Mountain, allow time to collect tickets and ride Chair J1 to the chalet area for lessons, rentals and dining. The parking area is below the main visitor facilities.

WHEN TO GO

January through March is a useful broad window for a winter visit. June’s operating season is separate from Mammoth’s, so use June’s own calendar and open-terrain report. Early season may offer less terrain and spring snow changes through the day.

Families can plan around lessons, the chalet and suitable runs without depending on an empty mountain. Holiday weekends and storm days still warrant extra arrival time. Summer and autumn bring lake and scenic-road trips, with lodging, cafés and mountain-pass access following their own seasons.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

June Lake Loop Scenic Drive

Outdoor

Explore the chain of lakes from the open road sections. The full circuit is seasonal; winter access uses the southern junction and stops short of the closed section.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Silver Lake Resort

Family

A seasonal lakeside stop for cabins, café and store on a warmer-season visit. Confirm its operating calendar before adding it to a ski trip.

🏔️

Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve

Outdoor

Plan a separate outing to see the lake and tufa formations, using currently open roads and designated visitor areas.

🍽️

Tiger Bar

Dining

Legendary local watering hole serving cold beers and local character since 1932

🏔️

June Lake Loop Snowshoeing

Outdoor

Use designated winter access to the road section closed to vehicles for a condition-appropriate snowshoe or Nordic outing. Stay on the route rather than treating lake ice as a trail.

WHERE TO STAY

June Lake offers rooms, suites and cabins with different settings around the village and loop. Double Eagle Resort and Spa combines rooms or cabins with dining, spa and indoor fitness facilities. Boulder Lodge offers varied room layouts, kitchenettes and an indoor pool, while June Lake Motel is a village-center choice for walking to restaurants and shops.

For a kitchen-equipped cabin stay, compare June Lake Pines and Reverse Creek Lodge. Most June Lake Pines cabins have full kitchens; check the specific unit and pet policy. Reverse Creek’s A-frames and creekside cabins occupy separate parts of its down-canyon property, so confirm the unit location and route to June Mountain. Silver Lake Resort is a fishing-season option for spring through fall, not a winter ski-lodging recommendation.

Mammoth Lakes is another base for travelers combining the two ski areas, with a separate road journey to June Mountain. Compare the actual property, winter route and transport arrangements rather than relying on a fixed drive time. For any rental, confirm the kitchen, sleeping layout and seasonal availability before booking.

THE FOOD SCENE

On the mountain, June Meadows Chalet Café sits at the top of Chair J1 and serves cafeteria-style breakfast and lunch. Plan the meal around lift access and the chalet’s seasonal service.

In June Lake, Tiger Bar & Cafe at 2620 Boulder Drive combines a full café with a bar and game area, making it useful for breakfast or a later meal. June Lake Brewing is the town tasting-room choice for locally brewed beer, with food from La Parrilla. Choose between an on-mountain break and a separate town stop when planning your day. Eagle’s Landing at Double Eagle Resort is another named option for a meal at a lodging property.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

June Lake Brewing pairs its tasting room with food from La Parrilla, while Tiger Bar & Cafe offers a bar, game area and café on Boulder Drive. Both give you a specific town destination after skiing. Check seasonal service and arrange the return to your lodging before settling in for drinks.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Allow time for the J1 ride from parking to the chalet before a lesson or rental fitting.
  • 💡Use the southern SR158 junction for winter arrival and check current road conditions.
  • 💡Choose a whole ski day at the mountain that fits your group rather than rushing between June and Mammoth.
  • 💡Use the current map for Silverado and the J2 progression areas; follow open-terrain signs.
