PAYS DU MONT-BLANC

THE REGION

The Pays du Mont-Blanc encompasses the French approaches to Western Europe's highest peak, a region where traditional Savoyard agriculture meets international Alpine tourism. At its heart lies Megeve, a village that quite literally invented the concept of the modern luxury ski resort.

The story begins in 1916 when Baroness Noemie de Rothschild, frustrated by the crowds and Germanic atmosphere of St. Moritz, declared that France needed its own elegant winter destination. She chose Megeve for its sunny position, medieval charm, and magnificent Mont Blanc views. By the 1920s, her vision had attracted Parisian society, and the template for the luxury ski village was established.

Unlike purpose-built resorts of later eras, Megeve grew around an existing medieval village. The 12th-century church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste still anchors the central square, surrounded by historic buildings that now house boutiques, restaurants, and hotels. Cobblestone streets prohibit most vehicle traffic, and horse-drawn carriages—once practical transport, now tourist attraction—clip-clop through the car-free center.

The geology positions Megeve uniquely. Rather than occupying a steep valley bottom, the village sits on a sunny plateau at 1,113m, facing directly toward the Mont Blanc massif. This position provides exceptional light exposure—the plateau receives significantly more sunshine than neighboring valleys—but places the skiing at modest altitude by Alpine standards. The highest point, Mont Joly, reaches only 2,525m.

The ski domain—now marketed as the Evasion Mont Blanc—spans four interconnected areas: Megeve itself, La Giettaz, Saint-Gervais, and Saint-Nicolas-de-Veroce. Together they offer over 400 kilometers of pistes, though the layout requires some planning to navigate efficiently. The terrain character emphasizes intermediate cruising through pine and larch forests, with limited challenging terrain and no glacial skiing.

The Rothschild vision established standards that persist today. Megeve never developed the concrete apartment blocks that characterize many French resorts. Building codes maintain traditional Savoyard architecture—wooden chalets, stone foundations, and slate or shingle roofs. The result is a village that feels organic rather than constructed, historic rather than manufactured.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Megeve cultivates a particular form of French mountain elegance—understated luxury rather than ostentatious display. The clientele tends toward established wealth rather than nouveau, Paris families rather than international jet-setters. The atmosphere suggests a private club to which membership requires both means and discretion.

Savoyard culinary tradition reaches particular refinement here. Multiple Michelin-starred restaurants operate in this village of barely 3,000 permanent residents. The local cuisine emphasizes cheese (Reblochon, Beaufort, Tomme de Savoie), cured meats, and hearty mountain preparations—tartiflette, fondue, raclette—elevated to gastronomic status.

The village's pedestrianized center rewards exploration. Boutiques range from ski equipment to haute couture. Art galleries display contemporary work alongside traditional Alpine paintings. Antique shops offer everything from vintage ski equipment to 18th-century furniture.

Evening entertainment tends toward civilized rather than raucous. Excellent restaurants dominate the scene, with après-ski bars offering refined alternatives to Austrian-style excess. The casino provides late-night entertainment for some. Most visitors, however, seem content with excellent dinners followed by early nights before first lifts.

The horse culture deserves mention. Beyond the decorative carriages, Megeve maintains serious equestrian traditions. The annual jumping competition attracts international competitors, and several stables offer riding excursions—including ski-joring behind horses for the adventurous.

GETTING THERE

Geneva is a convenient airport gateway. By train, book to Sallanches–Combloux–Megève and continue by regional bus or taxi to the village. In Megève, the seasonal local shuttle serves lift bases including Rochebrune, Jaillet and Mont d’Arbois. Match your accommodation to the lift or shuttle stop you expect to use most.

WHEN TO GO

Megève’s lower, wooded pistes are part of its appeal. Check which sectors and village returns are open for an early- or late-season stay. If you are coming for a specific festival, book against its current programme.
