THE REGION
Blue River, British Columbia sits in a narrow valley along Highway 5, roughly halfway between Kamloops and Valemount, at the convergence of three mountain ranges: the Cariboos, the Monashees, and the northern reaches of the Canadian Rockies. It is a tiny community of a few hundred residents, a gas station, and one of the most exclusive heli-ski operations on the planet. Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing holds exclusive tenure over 1.2 million acres of this backcountry, an area larger than the state of Rhode Island, encompassing more than a thousand skiable peaks, glaciers, alpine bowls, and deep forest glades.
The snow here is relentless. Blue River sits squarely in one of British Columbia's most productive snowbelts, receiving over ten metres of snowfall each winter. The terrain is remarkably varied: massive open powder bowls above treeline give way to perfectly spaced old-growth glades below, and long valley runs allow for thousands of feet of uninterrupted vertical. The operation has been refining its terrain knowledge since Austrian ski pioneer Mike Wiegele founded the company in 1970, and more than fifty years of daily flying have produced an encyclopedic understanding of where the best snow hides in every weather pattern.
This is heli-skiing in its purest, most refined form. There is no ski town to explore, no nightlife scene, no chairlift-served terrain. Blue River exists as a self-contained heli-ski village where every element of the experience, from the handcrafted log chalets to the 600-bottle wine cellar to the fleet of Bell and Eurocopter helicopters, has been built with a single purpose: to deliver the best powder skiing on Earth, followed by the most comfortable evening imaginable.
