Another season up here

BEYOND WINTER

Summer hiking and mountain sightseeing around Heather Meadows, with a seasonal cafe and mountain shop in the day lodge.

Before you go: Summer access depends on snowmelt and highway conditions. The cafe is currently closed until summer 2027; check its published opening schedule before traveling. Summer visits do not imply lift-served skiing or biking.

BEFORE YOU HEAD BEYOND THE LIFTS

Summer access is seasonal

Artist Point’s final road section closes with snow. Check the current road and trail reports separately, carry drinking water and confirm the required recreation pass.

A real plan for non-skiers

Baker has no tubing park, snowshoe rentals or Nordic trail network inside the ski-area boundary. A Bellingham day or a stay with indoor recreation gives a mixed-interest group more options.

THE REGION

Mount Baker Highway is the spine of this trip: Bellingham at the coast, small foothill communities along the road, Glacier near the final climb, then the snowy basins of Heather Meadows. Baker is a day-lodge mountain, not a pedestrian resort village. That makes choosing your overnight base part of the adventure.

Stay near Glacier for a shorter mountain commute and cabin evenings. Choose Bellingham for a broader choice of restaurants, waterfront walks and things to do when part of the group wants a day off the slopes. In summer, the same corridor leads to lakes, hiking and views of Mount Shuksan and Mount Baker.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Baker’s character comes from a big-snow ski and snowboard community and a modest collection of day lodges. Lunch happens on the mountain; the evening usually happens down the highway. Glacier offers a coffee-and-pizza stop or a cabin night, while Bellingham works better for a longer evening out.

Keep the day flexible: a storm can change road travel, the operating base and which lodges are open. For a group with non-skiers, a town base or accommodation with indoor recreation can be more useful than staying as close as possible to the lifts.

GETTING THERE

Bellingham International (BLI) is the closest regional air gateway. Seattle–Tacoma and Vancouver offer other arrival options, with a longer onward journey. Amtrak and regional buses reach Bellingham; arrange the mountain leg separately rather than assuming they continue to the lifts.

From Bellingham, follow SR 542 east. White Salmon is at mile 52 and Heather Meadows at mile 55. The tourism bureau suggests roughly 90 minutes from Bellingham or 30 minutes from Glacier-area stays in good conditions. Treat these as planning estimates, not live travel times. Allow extra time for storms and busy mornings.

Check WSDOT and the resort snow report before departure, carry chains and know how to fit them. Download directions while you have reliable service. There are no EV chargers at the ski area.

WHEN TO GO

Winter visits depend on the operating schedule and daily snow report, not a guaranteed opening date. Non-holiday Monday–Thursday tickets have lower off-peak prices; Friday–Sunday and holiday dates use peak rates. Baker does not offer night skiing.

Summer is a different trip: hiking around Heather Meadows and, when the final road section opens, sightseeing at Artist Point. Road access and trail snow cover are separate checks. The upper road can be open while trails remain buried. The Heather Meadows cafe is currently closed until summer 2027.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

Artist Point

Outdoor

Summer views of Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan at the end of SR 542. The final road section is seasonal; check WSDOT, recreation-pass requirements and snow conditions. Bring drinking water.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Bagley Lakes

Family

A comparatively short Heather Meadows outing: the tourism bureau describes an easy two-mile summer loop. Snow, wet footing and seasonal access can change the difficulty.

🏔️

Chain Lakes

Outdoor

A bigger hiking day, described by the tourism bureau as 6.5 miles with 1,800 feet of elevation gain. Check trail conditions and choose it for the group’s ability; it is not a casual lakeside stroll.

🎭

Heather Meadows History Hallway

Culture

Look for the historic photographs in the day lodge when it is open. A small indoor pause between mountain sessions, rather than a separate all-day attraction.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

A Bellingham day

Family

Use a town day for Fairhaven and the waterfront, with more dining choices than at the ski area. A useful option for mixed-interest groups or a rest day.

WHERE TO STAY

There is no overnight lodge or hotel at the ski area. Glacier puts you nearer the final climb: Blue T Lodge is a small lodge beside Chair 9, while Snowater offers privately booked condos with shared recreation facilities. Mt. Baker Lodging lists vacation homes around Glacier and Maple Falls; check the location and amenities of the particular home.

Bellingham trades a longer mountain drive for city restaurants and more off-slope options. Hotel Leo is one downtown choice, with room types ranging from historic hotel rooms to kitchen-equipped suites. For a self-contained camper, reserve designated winter overnight parking with the ski area; it is not a hookup campground.

THE FOOD SCENE

Start with the base that is operating that day. White Salmon has day-lodge food and the Crow Bar; Heather Meadows has its historic lodge and Taproom. Raven Hut provides a mid-mountain lunch stop with bowls and a fireplace. Check the daily report for access and openings.

Down the highway, Wake N’ Bakery in Glacier is a coffee-and-breakfast stop. Chair 9 serves Woodstone pizza, while North Fork Brewery in Deming pairs pizza with its own beer and a collection of brewery memorabilia. Check each operator’s menu and hours before making it the last stop of the evening.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Think lodge drinks or a stop on the drive down, rather than a late-night ski village. The Crow Bar at White Salmon and Taproom at Heather Meadows depend on mountain operations. Chair 9 is the Glacier pizza-and-drinks option; North Fork Brewery is farther down SR 542.

Arrange a sober driver before stopping. If the evening matters as much as the mountain day, staying in Bellingham gives the group more choices without another late drive up the highway.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Pick your base area before you arrive, especially if you have a lesson or rental reservation.
  • 💡A beginner lesson package includes different items from a standalone rental. Compare the inclusions, not just the price.
  • 💡For summer, check both the road and the trail. An open Artist Point road does not mean a snow-free hike.
  • 💡Baker has no tubing park, snowshoe-rental program or Nordic trail network inside the ski-area boundary. Plan a non-skier day around real options.
