THE REGION

Stoneham Mountain Resort is nestled in the Jacques-Cartier Valley of the Laurentian Mountains, just 20 minutes north of Quebec City. The resort offers an intimate skiing experience with 42 trails across 375 acres, featuring a 420-meter (1,380-foot) vertical drop and excellent night skiing on 18 illuminated runs.

Despite its modest size, Stoneham punches above its weight with challenging terrain including the steep La Crete and expert glades. The resort's proximity to Quebec City makes it a perfect complement to a cultural visit, and its terrain park program is among the best in Eastern Canada.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Stoneham-et-Tewkesbury is a small French-speaking community that serves as Quebec City's outdoor playground. The Jacques-Cartier Valley is renowned for its natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities year-round, including the Jacques-Cartier National Park.

The area's French-Canadian culture is evident in the warm hospitality, local cuisine, and the predominantly French-speaking community. The proximity to Quebec City adds a rich cultural dimension that few ski resorts can match.

GETTING THERE

Stoneham is north of Québec City, with Jean Lesage International Airport (YQB) as the nearby air gateway. Allow roughly 30–45 minutes from the airport as a planning guide, with extra time for snow and traffic.

A mountain-area stay simplifies ski days; a Québec City base adds restaurants and sightseeing. Check the road forecast before travelling and choose transport suitable for winter conditions.

WHEN TO GO

The season runs from late November through mid-April. January and February offer the coldest temperatures and most reliable snow. Stoneham's extensive snowmaking covers 85% of the terrain, ensuring consistent conditions throughout the season.

Night skiing (available Wednesday through Saturday) is a standout feature and a great way to maximize slope time. Late season in March offers warmer weather and festive spring skiing events.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

WHERE TO STAY

Hôtel Stoneham provides a straightforward mountain-area room option. For a broader city visit, compare staying in Québec City with the daily road journey to the slopes.

The Sépaq property at Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier offers several accommodation and camping types. Its year-round destination listing does not mean every campsite or vehicle facility operates in winter; choose the specific winter product directly with Sépaq.

THE FOOD SCENE

On-mountain dining includes the lodge cafeteria and the Base Camp pub. The village of Stoneham has a handful of restaurants. The real dining gem is nearby Quebec City, which boasts one of the highest concentrations of restaurants per capita in North America, with French-Canadian cuisine as the star.

Must-try Quebec specialties include poutine, smoked meat, cretons, and tire sur la neige (maple taffy on snow).

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

The Base Camp pub at the resort is a casual après gathering spot. For a livelier scene, head to Quebec City where the Grande Allée entertainment district offers numerous bars and restaurants. La Barberie and Griendel Brasserie Artisanale serve excellent local craft beers in a warm atmosphere.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Try night skiing on the illuminated runs — it's a completely different and magical experience
  • 💡Stay in Quebec City and combine skiing with a cultural city break for the best of both worlds
  • 💡Visit the Hôtel de Glace (Ice Hotel) near Valcartier for a unique winter experience
  • 💡The terrain park at Stoneham is one of the best in Eastern Canada — worth a session even if you're not a park regular

OVERNIGHT STAYS & CAMPERVANS

A booked Stoneham or Québec City base works well for winter ski days. Treat campground availability as date-specific: a summer camping listing does not establish winter vehicle access or facilities.

Hôtel Stoneham is a booked-room alternative. Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier also has several accommodation types; choose a specific winter product with Sépaq rather than assuming all summer campsites are accessible.
