THE REGION

Telluride occupies a dramatic box canyon at 8,750 feet in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, surrounded on three sides by towering 13,000-foot peaks. The setting is arguably the most stunning of any ski resort in North America, with the iconic Bridal Veil Falls (Colorado's tallest free-falling waterfall) visible at the canyon's eastern end. Originally a prosperous gold and silver mining town in the late 1800s, Telluride's isolation preserved its Victorian architecture and independent character long after the mines closed.

The ski resort spans terrain on both sides of the canyon, accessed from two base areas: the historic town of Telluride and the modern Mountain Village, connected by a free 13-minute gondola ride that is a marvel of engineering and convenience. The mountain offers 2,000 acres of skiable terrain with a remarkable 4,425-foot vertical drop. From steep bump runs and technical chutes off the Revelation Bowl and Gold Hill to perfectly groomed cruisers and wide-open intermediate terrain, Telluride delivers exceptional skiing with a fraction of the crowds found at Front Range resorts.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Telluride is a study in contrasts -- a former rough-and-tumble mining town that now attracts billionaires, yet somehow maintains an authentically funky mountain character. The town banned formula restaurants and chain stores, so every business on Colorado Avenue is locally owned. Butch Cassidy robbed his first bank here in 1889, and that outlaw spirit persists in the town's independent, slightly rebellious culture. Mountain Village, by contrast, is a purpose-built European-style village with luxury hotels and upscale shopping. The free gondola between them literally bridges two worlds, and both are essential to the Telluride experience.

GETTING THERE

Compare flights to Telluride Regional Airport and Montrose Regional Airport, then arrange your onward transfer. From Montrose, the approach crosses Dallas Divide on the way to the box canyon. In town, the Galloping Goose serves local stops. The free passenger gondola connects Telluride and Mountain Village when operating, with bus service during seasonal maintenance. For fall 2026 the town lists its gondola closure through November 19.

WHEN TO GO

Telluride's season typically runs from late November through early April. The resort's high altitude and north-facing terrain preserve snow quality well into spring. February and March are the sweet spot, offering deep snowpack, more manageable crowds, and increasingly longer days. January delivers the most consistent cold smoke powder but temperatures can be bitterly cold. Late March and early April bring spring skiing conditions with warm sun and corn snow. Avoid Christmas and New Year's weeks when the small town feels overloaded and lodging prices peak.

Mountain Village options include Madeline’s rooms and residences, Lumière beside Lift 4, and ski-in/ski-out lodging at The Peaks and Inn at Lost Creek. Check the gondola’s seasonal schedule and last return when planning dinner in the other village.

THE FOOD SCENE

For Allred’s, leave the public gondola at San Sophia station between Telluride and Mountain Village. Bon Vivant is a ski-in French lunch stop at Lift 5. In town, Brown Dog serves pizza and La Marmotte offers a French dinner in its historic downtown setting.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

there… Telluride pairs dinner and cocktails in town. If you are returning to Mountain Village, check the last gondola or seasonal replacement bus before choosing a table.
